Whether you’re already health conscious or making it your goal to eat healthily in the new year, Zpizza has options you’re bound to love. The 25 year old, California based chain has diversified its’ menu to contain both vegan and gluten-free options. I had the opportunity to taste test their best sellers. Keep reading to find out if the healthier choices compromise taste.
Vegan: A Healthy Start
Zpizza dough is made from 100% organic wheat flour prepared fresh every day, hand-thrown and fire-baked until crispy. You can combine select ingredients to create your own pizza or go with one of Zpizza’s signature combinations. They offer award-winning skim mozzarella from Wisconsin, certified organic tomato sauce, MSG-free pepperoni, additive-free sausage, and fresh produce as toppings.
For people with celiac disease, or those that may be sensitive to gluten, a gluten-free diet is essential. The condition, caused by an abnormal immune response to gluten, can damage the lining of the small intestine. That, in turn, can prevent important nutrients from being absorbed. As awareness of celiac disease increases, so will gluten-free food choices but Zpizza is ahead of the curve. They currently offer a flavorful array of gluten-free pizzas. The gluten-free crust is imported from America and available in the regular size (10 in) only.
The Taste Test
I sampled two best sellers; the Mexican and the Tuscan. The Mexican was topped with chopped tomato, chicken, onion, sliced avocado and swirls of sour cream. It’s taste was reminiscent of a quesadilla with a mild kick of spice. It was my favorite of the two. The Tuscan is a white pizza with no tomato sauce and is best described as sweet. The onions were caramelized just right.
So, here’s how the taste test went down. First, I tasted each pizza in it’s original recipe. Then, for direct comparison, I sampled gluten-free and vegan versions of the same pizza. The only notable difference between the two is that the gluten-free crust is slightly thinner than the original. As far as taste goes, nothing changed. Both options were equally flavorful. Moreover, I departed from a pizza luncheon feeling satisfied as opposed to heavy. Zpizza is a lighter, healthier choice for pizza lovers who refuse to compromise taste.
