I’m not a gamer but my husband and sons are so I’ve got to keep up. My latest review of the Acer KG241 gaming monitor has taken my knowledge to a whole new level and they had a tone of fun in the process.
What exactly is a gaming monitor?
Acer KG241 (part of the KG1 Series) is a monitor developed especially for gaming. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably wondering what the difference is between regular and gaming monitors, so let me explain.
Gaming monitors are designed to make the output of your graphics and CPU look as good as possible while gaming. Basically, they boost your computer’s image rendering processing to produce sharp imagery and motion.
How does Acer stack up?
Acer is a global leader and innovator in gaming displays. It’s latest KG1 series rollout have fast response times up to 0.5ms, high refresh rates of up to 165Hz, and superb color rendering with full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution.
KG241 comes in several sizes. Our review unit was 24 inches – perfectly sized for the boys’ room. It has a ZeroFrame design that reduces bezels for a more immersive view. It’s black with a red stand for a little splash of color and assembly was minimal. I simply had to slide the stand into the groove on the back of the monitor and tighten one screw.
This display connects to your system via HDMI or VGA and tilts for your viewing preference. It comes with a power cable and VGA cable in the box but to my surprise, there was no HDMI cable. Thankfully, we had one on hand to connect the Nintendo Switch.
Honestly, I stood there perplexed as to whether or not NBA 2K20 looked any different on the monitor than it does on the TV so I called in the expert – my husband. At a glance, he quickly assured me that visually, the KG241 was living up to its hype. Thanks to its AMD Free Sync Premium technology, gaming was smooth and we didn’t experience glitching.
My oldest boy wears glasses so eye health is really important to me. I’m super conscious about the amount and quality of screen time that both boys have. Therefore, I found Acer’s BlueLightShield and flicker-less technology comforting. BlueLightShield is an application that allows users o control how much blue light is used to display an image. I was able to lower the levels of blue light to lessen the negative effects of blue light exposure without compromising brightness. This is a innovative and healthy conscious addition by Acer.
We don’t have many big screens in our home and the boys have been asking to have a TV put in their room for gaming. We’ve been apprehensive about that but the gaming monitor might be a better alternative. Their time on screen would be limited to gaming only which is easier to control and removes my worries about them possibly consuming content that has not been approved.
I wouldn’t want to take up floor space in their room so the monitor would have to be mounted on the wall. A quick google search revealed that KG241 can be mounted with a VESA mount (sold separately) so a gaming monitor might make sense for us.
