I made my way to GITEX Shopper in Dubai for two reasons; First, I needed to snag myself a new Macbook Pro and second, I couldn’t miss the biggest tech shopping experience of the year. Along the way, I saw some cool, innovative and down right hilarious things. Here’s my best of the best from GITEX Shopper 2013.
Best Deal. The most impressive bargains were on tablets, namely iPads/iPad Mini and cameras. But for me the best deal goes to that needle in the hay stack. Macbooks had the least presence of all other computer brands represented. In fact, there was only two retailers there selling them (iStyle and E-City). The best deal goes to E-City for their offer on my newly purchased Macbook Pro. E-City bundled their add-ons based on the purchase amount as opposed to the type of product purchased. Here’s what I got for spending more than 4000 AED: internet security 2014, optical mouse, chat headset, Wasel SIM card, Canon multifunction printer and my choice of a 7″ tablet and Microsoft Office OR a 500 GB portable hard drive and 14 MP Fujifilm digital camera. I chose the latter and walked away with the laptop, camera, hard drive and additional goodies for the original price of the computer. Sweet!
Best Booth. Some brands really did it big. I’m talking custom built platform displays, branded wall panels towering over the showroom floor and LED lights illuminating spaces. In my opinion, the best display goes to Nokia. Their booth had everything going for it including location. It was located in the front, just off the main thoroughfare as shoppers entered the showroom. The booth was as wildly colored as their latest mobile phone models. When I walked in the bright yellow space caught my attention and pulled me in. It was my first stop and the most memorable.
Best New Product. There were some pretty spectacular smartphone launches (i.e. Nokia Lumia 1020) but what impressed me the most was the world’s first curved TV. It’s made by LG and it’s slick. The body is thin, panoramic and curved. The picture quality was amazing and I enjoyed looking at it. It’s entertainment and art all wrapped into one. Kudos to LG for bringing it to us first.
Best Experience. You go to these types of events and you know what to expect…one booth after another claiming the best deal on all the same products. But alas, there was one that focused more on providing an experience than pushing a sale. Blackberry. While they’ve been in the media lately as a fledgling brand, they finish first in this category. Blackberry, an official partner of Formula 1 and Mercedes, sponsors the vehicle that award winning driver Lewis Hamilton will drive during the 2013 season. Therefore, the company decided to give GITEX visitors a chance to take a virtual test drive. Their booth included a full size replica car and monitor system which simulated the racetrack. I saw several grown men, climb in and give it a whirl. I didn’t dig in with my platform wedges but I watched as those who took a turn enjoyed themselves.
Best Dressed. The list wouldn’t be complete without a little fashion. There was a sea of people in branded t-shirts and polos from Columbia.com. (You can find Columbia coupons right here – https://www.groupon.com/coupons/stores/columbia.com) but one stood out from the rest. And the award for Best Dressed goes to….Aleksander Vasilevski who represented Nokia from his head to his feet. (and found his picture on my Instagram account) Check out the adidas.
The GITEX Shopper 2013 runs from October 5 thru October 12. If you haven’t gone already, you have a few more days to visit and shop.
